FORCES ACTING ON STRUCTURES AND MECHANISMS


OVERALL EXPECTATIONS

  • Analyse social and environmental impacts of forces acting on structures and mechanisms 
  • Investigate forces that act on structures and mechanisms;
  • Identify forces that act on and within structures and mechanisms, and describe the effects of these forces on structures and mechanisms.

Project:

This is not a group project.

 Make a bridge or a small building out of any combination of

-Popsicle sticks

-drinking straws

-meat skewers (wood...not metal)

-cardboard

-glue (remember..hot glue guns are not allowed in class)

-string

 In a brief written (short essay, slide show) statement describe how your structure withstands the four types of internal forces and any external forces. Remember to detail design features such as the use of triangles, curves, and or a stable and fixed foundation.  Remember to show how it can withstand internal forces such as compression, tension, torsion, and bending.  Remember to show how it can withstand external forces such as the weight of people, the wind or rain, or the movement caused by moving vehicles.

 You will present your structure and demonstrate its stability.
